Q. How is PRO related to Rundeck OSS?

A. Rundeck PRO uses a tested and certified distribution of the webapp and CLI tools that come from the open source project hosted at http://rundeck.org.

Q. How is PRO different than Rundeck OSS?

A. PRO is a tested certified software stack ensuring a supportable Rundeck distribution. PRO for Linux has its own installer that installs the  RUNDECK PRO webapp with a Tomcat container rather than using an embedded, less customizable server container (jetty). PRO for Windows also includes its own plugins and project content.

Q. Why use Tomcat?

A. Tomcat is a widely used webapp container that many users have experience managing. A full set of administrator and user documentation is available, as well as, a good number support forums. Tomcat will also enable PRO to support higher scale deployments.

Q. Why does PRO for Linux make me use an installer?

A. The rdpro-installer tool is meant to provide an easy to install and configure PRO deployment. The installer is actually a front end to installing multiple components (PRO webapp, tomcat and CLI tools) but future versions will contain other software components.
We intend to also support system packaging tools.

Q. MS Windows?

A. You can run RUNDECK PRO on a Windows Server. Currently, we don’t have a special Windows installer ready now but let us know if you would prefer to install and configure RUNDECK PRO on Windows Server. If you want to try PRO on windows today, install Apache Tomcat as a windows service and then manually deploy the WAR.

Q. Can I just deploy the WAR to my own container?

A. Yes, but the installer assumes a Tomcat container. The rdpro-installer can deploy the webapp and CLI tools separately. Refer to the knowledge base article: http://support.rundeck.com/customer/portal/articles/1664720-install-rundeck-pro-to-my-own-tomcat-
